Typhoon Feria slows down, death toll climbs to 8

Two persons died in a landslide in Cagayan de Oro City, bringing tropical depression Feria’s (international codename Nangka) death toll to eight, government data showed Thursday.
The National Disaster Coordinating Council’s (NDCC) 6 a.m. update on “Feria” said the six other fatalities include four in Quezon province two in Cebu province.
The latest fatalities were Edgar Salida and a certain Renico, who both died in a landslide in Barangay Tumpagon, Cagayan de Oro City around 1 p.m. Wednesday.
The four fatalities from Quezon were Roberto Longaza, Ruben Rajas, Boyet Drias, Ryan Brogada, crewmembers of M/B Annabel, which was hit by a tornado while docked at Sitio Pinagbayan, Barangay Sanguirin, Perez town. Vicente Layague and another person died of drowning after being swept by strong current in Hilutungan, Bantayan Island in Cebu.
Eleven people, including a four-year-old, remained missing and five people have been injured in Southern Leyte, Cebu and Quezon province.
The NDCC said rescue and retrieval teams have been dispatched to locate the missing persons.
Weather bureau PAGASA said “Feria” has slowed down and has changed its course to the west northwest direction.
It was spotted 105 kilometers west southwest of Subic, Zambales or 170 kilometers west of Metro Manila, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour.
Storm signal No. 1 was hoisted over the northern towns of Mindoro province, Lubang Island, Batangas, Bataan, Zambales and Metro Manila.
The NDCC and the Department of Education on Wednesday night declared that classes in the elementary and highschool levels in Metro Manila, Batangas, Bataan and Cavite would remain suspended on Thursday.
A radio report said elementary and highschool classes in Zambales have also been suspended.
Displaced, stranded
The NDCC said a total of 10,288 families or 44,401 persons in 122 villages in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon), Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas.
The agency said that based on reports from its field officers, 24 houses were ravaged by a tornado and storm surge in Barangay San Rafael and Barangay Sta. Rosa in Quezon province after midnight Wednesday and 10 more houses in Barangay San Rafael III, Noveleta in Cavite were also damaged due to storm surge.
Twenty houses were also totally destroyed by a tornado in Can-Avid, Eastern Samar during the storm’s onslaught on Wednesday and 534 homes were damaged by flashfloods in Romblon province.0
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has barred sea vessels in affected areas from sailing. In its latest report, 9,978 passengers were stranded in 24 ports in Southern Luzon and Visayas.
Also stranded in ports were 108 trucks, 61 cars, 61 passenger buses and 2,347 rolling cargoes. Sixty-one vessels and 105 motor bancas were also stranded in various ports.
The PCG said it is providing the necessary assistance, safety and security to the stranded passengers.
The Manila International Airport Authority, in its 9:45 p.m. Wednesday advisory, said 68 domestic and international flights have been cancelled while two were delayed due to “Feria”.
